Vietnam looks to treble Russian tourist arrivals in 2014

The Vietnamese tourism authority, buoyed by the rapid growth in Russian tourist arrivals in the last two years, has drawn up an ambitious plan to treble the number of Russian visitors to the country to 300,000 in 2014 from the 2011 figure.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong, deputy director of the markets department under the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), said that to translate this plan into reality, VNAT would be participating in a series of fairs in Russia and organizing road shows and publicity campaigns there.

The national tourism authority will also arrange familiarization trips to Vietnam for Russian media organizations so that they can gain insights into the country’s places of interest and what the tourism sector can offer for Russian travelers.

Human resources will be developed and services upgraded in the favorite destinations for Russian visitors such as Binh Thuan, Khanh Hoa, Danang and Quang Nam.

Currently there are a few tourism-related activities in Russia, such as the Vietnamese Cultural Week and participating in fairs in the Russian market.

“We have just attended a fair in Russia and found that this market holds strong growth potential. The target of 300,000 tourists in 2014 is quite ambitious but achievable if the said measures are taken,” said Huong.

VNAT last month joined the Moscow International Travel & Tourism Exhibition 2012, together with 13 Vietnamese tour operators and hotels, as well as representatives of key tourist provinces like Binh Thuan. At the event, many partners suggested extending the visa-free stay to 30 days from the current 15 days because Russian tourists usually have long holidays.

Moreover, the foreign partners recommended Vietnam operate scheduled flights between its local tourist destinations and Russia so that visitors will not have to travel an additional distance after arriving in Hanoi and HCMC.

Vietnam-Russia air services, Huong said, connect Vietnam’s major cities and Moscow, which is far from Russia’s Far East region where most Russian tourists to Vietnam come from. Therefore, Russian tourists often choose to fly to Vietnam on chartered flights.

However, under a market development strategy, VNAT focuses on luring visitors on scheduled flights.

“The daily flights from Hanoi or HCMC to Moscow are now fully occupied by Russians, but we still lack air links to other cities,” said Huong.

After becoming one of Vietnam’s top ten visitor-generating markets, Russian tourist arrivals picked up 27.1% in March, the second highest monthly growth rate after South Korea. In the first two months of the year, there were more than 56,000 Russians coming to Vietnam, versus the 100,000 in all of last year.

Russian tourists prefer the country’s coastal resort towns in Binh Thuan and Khanh Hoa. In late April this year, Russians will start arriving on daily chartered flights in Danang and from there they can travel to the World Heritage-listed ancient town of Hoi An in neighboring Quang Nam Province.

2.9 million foreign tourists visit HCMC in 10 months

In October, the number of foreign tourists flocking to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) reached an estimated 450,000, an increase of 11 percent over October 2010.

On the whole, the southern hub attracted nearly 2.9 million foreign tourist arrivals in the first ten months of 2011, a year-on-year increase of 10 percent.

Tourism turnover in October was estimated at VND 4.8 trillion, up 20 percent compared to the same period last year. This brought the figure for the first ten months of 2011 to VND 38.8 trillion, up 21 percent.

Currently, the city’s department of culture, sport and tourism is finishing plans for a gastronomy festival featuring delicious dishes from around the world. The festival will be held from December 26, 2011 to January 1, 2012 and is expected to draw the participation of 80 domestic and foreign organisations.

In additional, the HCMC tourism sector is coordinating with relevant agencies to prepare for activities and events which will be held during the New Year Festival and the Lunar New Year Festival 2012. Organisers are hopefully these events will attract even more foreign visitors to the city.

Bangkok flooding scares away Vietnam tourists

Several travel agencies in HCMC have suspended package tours to Bangkok until the flooding there subsides, even although the Tourism Authority of Thailand insists that the city is still safe for tourists.

Doan Thi Thanh Tra, marketing manager of Saigontourist Travel Services Co., said the firm has put off tours to Thailand’s capital Bangkok until the end of next week. Clients can collect their deposits, choose another destination or delay their tour until normal service resumes.

“We still had tours to Bangkok last week but Thailand’s worst flooding in half a century has hit the city hard and has affected our schedule. We have no choice but to postpone tour packages there, Tra told the Daily on Monday.

Saigontourist normally offers tours to Thailand six days a week. For the package tour set to depart on Tuesday, half of the 27 clients had collected their deposits and the remainder changed destination, she added.

Luu Dinh Phuc, general director of Viettours Trading and Services Co., said his company has also delayed tours to Thailand because most customers were concerned for their safety.

He said the company will restart tours to Thailand next week and that customers can receive a full refund if they want to cancel their trips, Phuc added.

Meanwhile, Vietravel Co. is still offering Thai tours despite the rising floods because it believes that the tour schedule is not likely to be affected by the flooding. The company offers four daily tours to Bangkok and it has even sent 600 employees there to attend a training program.

Vietnam the largest market for Cambodia’s tourism

Cambodian Minister of Tourism Thong Khon asserted on Wednesday that Vietnam is the largest visitor-generating market for his country’s tourism industry, and the country is seeking to attract more tourists from Vietnam.

The minister said at the launch of the Cambodian Night held at the five-star Rex Hotel on Wednesday that Cambodia welcomed 470,000 visitors from Vietnam last year, and the figure is expected to rise to 550,000 this year.

The Cambodian Night was held by the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism as part of the 7th International Travel Expo (ITE) HCMC 2011, aiming at introducing its culture and tourism to Vietnamese customers.

Cambodian Night attracted 500 representatives from travel agencies and hundreds of international buyers worldwide who took part in the travel event.

The Cambodian dignitary also said 24 Cambodian tourism companies were taking part in this year’s ITE, almost triple the number from the similar event last year.

“We will expand our promotion activities in an effort to bring you all the information you need about Cambodia,” Thong Khon said.

The ministry will also organize an art show in HCMC Opera House with the participation of hundreds of Cambodian artists on Thursday’s evening. The show is free to all guests.

At the ITE, Cambodian enterprises also set up their own stall next to their country’s common pavilion. Particularly, NagaWorld Hotel and Entertainment Complex in the Cambodian capital city of Phnom Penh invited celebrities to attract visitors and offer special tourism programs for Vietnamese customers at its large stall.
